Design Intern
Position Summary: The Design Intern assists Project Designers with design and administrative tasks related to residential remodeling projects ranging from kitchen and bathroom remodels to additions and whole-house remodels.
Objective: This entry-level position provides confidence and skill growth while assisting Project Designers.
Key Results – Design Function
- Provide administrative and design support to a team of Designers during the design and production phases.
- Assist with all aspects of the design phase including materials palettes, sourcing, documentation, bids, and data entry.
- Material library management and organization
- Obtain and return samples to local and online vendors.
- Assist Project Designers with field verifications, materials/product research and documentation of final selections for contract.
- Assist with documenting, measuring, photographing, and drafting existing spaces.
- Draft as-built plans for Project Designers.
- Assist in drafting conceptual and contract-ready plan sets in Chief Architect and implement redline revisions.
- Assist with client presentations.
Education and Experience
- AA or BA degree in progress for Interior Design from an accredited program or equivalent work experience
- Foundational knowledge of design principles and residential construction methods
- Basic understanding of design materials and finishes
- Demonstrates initiative and excellent communication & problem-solving skills
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Preferred)
- Chief Architect experience preferred.
- Microsoft Office suite applications.
- Excellent communication, organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in time and project management in a rapidly changing environment with competing priorities.
- Beginner’s proficiency in the progression of design and production phases.
- Ability to work independently, as well as collaborate across departments.
- Growing confidence in presenting to clients and communicating and selling your design ideas.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Developing organizational, time management and planning skills
- Adept in fundamentals of interior design, including but not limited to space planning, material & finish properties, elements & principles of design and lighting design.
- Demonstrate initiative and resourcefulness when assigned tasks where there is minimal information and oversight.
- Collaborative team player with enthusiasm to learn and grow.
- Excellent listening skills, with ability to infer design solutions based on client needs.
- High level of professionalism in all interactions: internally, with trade partners and vendors, and most importantly with clients.
Physical Demands/ADA Requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time and perform computer related activities.
- Ability to drive up to a 40-mile radius from the office to clients’ homes and company facilities.
- Ability to communicate effectively via phone, email, text.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
