Primary Suite Addition Transforms Cramped Home into Spacious Haven

This 1,400-square-foot home felt tight for the family of four who lived there. With just three bedrooms, there was no dedicated space for visiting relatives, and the 11’ x 11’ primary suite had limited furniture options due to its wall-to-wall closet and large window. The adjoining bath was small and underwhelming, while the existing kitchen struggled with limited counter space, minimal storage, and a garage door that blocked access to cabinetry and the dishwasher. The family envisioned a larger kitchen with better flow, more storage, and a flexible new room for guests, a playroom, or a home office—all while adding a luxurious primary suite.

To achieve a more spacious kitchen, a partition wall between the living room and primary suite closet was removed, opening the floor plan and making way for a 10-foot island with seating, storage, and a beverage refrigerator. The homeowners chose to borrow square footage from their dining room to expand the kitchen, allowing the new island to serve as a social hub for meals and gatherings. Along with new cabinetry lining the kitchen’s perimeter, the transformation includes a striking backsplash and a generous prep space, all bathed in natural light.

The island doubles as extra workspace and a gathering spot, with sage cabinets contrasting the white island base. Stained alder accents add warmth, while luxury vinyl plank floors provide a white oak look without the upkeep. The well-defined zones for cooking, cleaning, and refrigeration bring order to this now-inviting kitchen.

Better Day-to-Day Living Airy Cabinets and Plenty of Workspace

The original kitchen cabinetry was cramped and felt heavy, with upper cabinets pressed too close to the counters. Now, the updated kitchen showcases an open cabinet hood and focal backsplash detail above the range. Stained wood accents add charm, with open shelving for collectibles and wine. Dark bronze fixtures pop against white quartz counters, and a charcoal quartz island countertop provides an easy-maintenance surface for dining and prep.

The sink wall is brighter with white tile, while 13-inch deep upper cabinets offer ample workspace below. This refreshed layout finally gives the two-cook household plenty of room to work together seamlessly, while an organized layout ensures prep, cooking, and cleanup flow effortlessly.

The former primary bedroom was a narrow 11’ x 11’ room with little space for furniture. To remedy this, a 330-square-foot addition was added to the rear of the home, transforming the primary suite into a spacious retreat. Window placement in the new room was carefully chosen to accommodate bed and side tables, and the large windows flood the room with natural light while connecting it to the backyard.

The new primary bathroom nearly doubled in size, with a 5-foot vanity that includes a double bank of drawers for storage and a shelf within the sink cabinet. Pale sage walls and a polished white quartz countertop brighten the space, complemented by luxury vinyl plank flooring that carries throughout the home. The roomy shower, complete with a bench and niche, is framed by large-scale white tile that reflects light from the opposite window.

New Flex Space Reimagining the Third Bedroom

The former primary bedroom was reimagined as a flexible third bedroom, equipped with a Murphy bed and custom cabinetry, serving as a guest room, office, or playroom. Its direct access to the backyard gives guests and kids easy access to outdoor spaces, making it a versatile and welcoming area for this busy family.
