One of the many reasons homeowners decide to remodel is due to a lack of space or storage. Although it may seem like a daunting task, there are many ways that you can maximize space in your home whether it be through clever re-design or off-the-shelf accessories. With a great designer and a creative mind, the possibilities are endless. Here are four ways our clients have maximized space in their homes:

1. Appliance Garages

Incorporating an appliance garage into your kitchen is a simple way to hide bulky appliances while keeping them accessible. Below, our client added an appliance garage to their kitchen that’s large enough to hide their stand mixer as well as coffee-making accessories.

Appliance garages aren’t just for kitchens! For this client, we incorporated an appliance garage into their bathroom which is great for hiding unwanted counter clutter such as a hair dryer or toothbrushes.

2. Custom Cabinetry

Updating your cabinets to achieve custom organization is another way you can maximize your space. This client added a custom pull-out for a hard-to-reach cabinet corner in their kitchen. This allows the homeowner to utilize the full depth of the cabinet and store items in places that would be hard to reach otherwise. Take a look at a few other custom cabinet designs that can be utilized throughout the whole house:

3. Re-purposing Unused Space for Storage

Before you conclude that adding square feet to your home is the only way you will gain more room, consider spaces in your home that are unused and can be re-purposed.

For example, this homeowner converted unused space under their stairs to add several open storage cubby holes perfect for hanging coats or bags. Pull-out drawers were added below to hide from view other items such as shoes.

4. Using Lighting to Maximize Space

Lighting makes a huge difference, and most of the time we don’t even realize it! Well-lit spaces make everything appear bigger and brighter; when adding new lighting to a room, you may realize it isn’t as cramped as you thought. Under-cabinet lighting, especially in a kitchen, is becoming increasingly popular amongst homeowners. It creates the illusion of a larger room while also providing ample work lighting.

Adding cabinet lighting and under cabinet lighting in this small bar area visually creates the look of a large space and allows the homeowner to prepare their favorite alcoholic beverage at ease!
