We’re often hyper-focused on what needs to happen before a remodel can begin. We’ve got our checklists; we’ve shopped around different remodeling companies and local contractors; it is after all, one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a homeowner. But what you’ve always wanted is much simpler — a roomy master suite to call your own. You know your pain points, you know what makes you want a remodel, but you aren’t quite sure if the space you have can hold what you want, or if you need to add on to the home to get what you want. Warming Up to the Modern Aesthetic
Tip: When conquering a modern master bath makeover, you want to keep the following in mind: Why do you want a modern feel, as opposed to something traditional or transitional? Will it improve the livability of the space or is it mostly for design purposes?
While a modern makeover was one of the main goals of this project, the inspiration for this bathroom remodel was also grounded in a frustration that had built up for years in this home — not being able to use the space to its full potential. Next Stage Design was able to rework the bathroom’s footprint to create smarter storage and space-saving solutions that addressed the homeowners’ pain points.
Since the former master bath appeared dark and cramped, we took every opportunity to visually expand the space as part of this modern makeover. Adding the glass-enclosed shower makes the new master bath feel expansive, and the new storage niches eliminate the need for the shower caddy which made the space feel cluttered. We removed the original medicine cabinet in favor of new sink tilt outs, as well as the old plate mirror.
It took up a lot of room without providing much of the modern visual interest that the client desired, so we swapped in LED mirrors over each sink. This gave us better task lighting without taking any elbow room away from the vanity area. To make this master bath feel like a true retreat, we topped off the modern makeover with heated floors and towel warmers, heightening the spa-like feel of this master bath.
Room to Move
Tip: When reworking your master suite, don’t be afraid to think big picture! If you have big space needs and a small footprint, consider working with a local home remodeling company to assess what can move where and if not, what can be added to give you what you need.
These Santa Clara homeowners, as many who pursue a bathroom remodel will agree, wanted better separation between the master suite and the rest of the home. We were able to expand the footprint of the master suite by taking underutilized space from the kitchen and dining areas. In many remodels, as was the case in this one, it’s easier to rework space than add on to the home.
The improved space plan called for a spa-like retreat with modern amenities such as a large walk-in shower, double vanity, private toilet room, extra-large closet, and a private entrance from the Master Bedroom. We sealed the modern feel, and created a sense of calm and relaxation, by incorporating shades of gray, blue and sage green.

Homeowners share concerns that bathroom remodels with a modern feel can present as cold and unwelcoming, but we knew that it was possible to have both. The crisp quartz countertops anchor the modern master suite, with the warm natural cherry cabinets to soften up the edges of the room. The watercolor backsplash gives the feeling of a beachside cottage, and provides this mostly modern space with the warmth and texture that the client knew would fit perfectly in their forever home.
